Background Information
The Ontario Government has introduced changes to the recycling model across the province. This change shifts the financial and operational responsibility away from the municipalities and onto the producers of recyclable materials.
As of January 1, 2026, the Township of Huron-Kinloss, as well as all other municipalities in Ontario, will no longer operate the Blue Box Program. The new Blue Box program will be Ontario wide and will be operated by an organization called Circular Materials for Ontario. https://www.circularmaterials.ca/
Under the new regulations, residential recycling will continue to operate using a curbside collection system, similar to how it is currently. However, all public recycling facilities in the province will no longer be available. In Huron-Kinloss this means the recycling bins at the landfills as well as the cardboard bins in Point Clark, Ripley and Lucknow, will no longer be available.
Also, under the new regulations, those primarily affected will be Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) properties including businesses, farms, schools, places of worship, long-term care homes, and municipal/public facilities which will no longer be eligible for the Blue Box Program.
The purpose of this survey is to both inform you of the upcoming changes as well as understand the recycling needs and practices of the ICI properties in Huron-Kinloss which will not be eligible for the new Blue Box Program as of January 1, 2026. Your responses will inform the Township how to support a recycling solution for your organization in response to these changes. We will continue to communicate key information in the coming months.
